faster! c'mon can't you drive faster?!

(once again), we have an incidental (but irresitible) Muse

I hope I am not the only one, but on occasion, I find myself trying to write a Hub simply because of a photo. To be more precise, I feel that for certain photos, there surely must be a Hub, un-written that deserves to see the light of print. Perhaps I need to coin a term (borrowed from an episode of 'Seinfeld') and write about how some photos are 'Hub-worthy'.

The photo at the top of this Hub surely qualifies as being Hub-worthy. The dog in the photo is, of course, Una, our Chodsky Pes and she is also the subject of a number of other Hubs. Una is healthy and growing and totally loves riding in the car, as it seems all dogs do. I used to wonder why they love the experience of driving with their heads out the window, when this photo came across my desk, I immediately strated doing some online research and came up with the following explanations for this phenomenom (one scientific and well-referenced, from wikipedia) and the other one not so much.

Smell

The highly sensitive nose of a dog.

While the human brain is dominated by a large visual cortex, the dog brain is dominated by an olfactory cortex. The olfactory bulb in dogs is roughly forty times bigger than the olfactory bulb in humans, relative to total brain size, with 125 to 220 million smell-sensitive receptors. The bloodhound exceeds this standard with nearly 300 million receptors. Dogs can discriminate odors at concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can. The wet nose is essential for determining the direction of the air current containing the smell. Cold receptors in the skin are sensitive to the cooling of the skin by evaporation of the moisture by air currents.(courtesy Wikipedia)

The highly developed sense of smell theory (of why dogs love to ride in cars) is very persuasive, (for the dog) it must be like walking through a forest of radios, each tuned to a different station, playing at a perfectly balanced volume. Or maybe it is like one of those movies sequences that Disney Studios were famous for (before they started specializing in pre-teen culture conditioning and target marketing), in which the scene would start with a close-up of a single tulip and the camera would 'zoom out' until the audience saw many tulips and then the whole field (continuing to zoom out) then the countryside would fill the frame and eventually you would see the (a) continent from the perspective of being in outer space. Or perhaps, being a dog riding with your head out of a car window, is more like the synesthesia that was often experienced by college students, back in the day, when we were expected to experiment with mind altering substances, which many of us did, and no, we did not all end up as worthless drug addicts. One more example of adults miscalculating the young and deciding that it was necessary to lie to (their) own children about the dangers of growing up and thereby lie to themselves all in response to fear, fear that they were not equipped to make a decision for themselves.

And then again, maybe it's just that (for the dog) they feel like they are chasing something at 35 mph... given how Una is inclined to run around the backyard as fast as she can, this interpretation is not such a stretch.
In any event, most dogs (and some cats, I hear) really, really enjoy the experience of riding in a car with their heads out the window. (note: maximum recommended speed is <35 mph. Any faster and the risk of bug impact it too great. As one who has driven motorcycles, 'sans faceshields', I can attest to the fact that bugs flying at more than 35 mph really, really hurt when you run into them.)

So this is my short, photo induced Hub.there is a Facebook page, "Dogs Riding in Cars' that is a lot of fun. Of course, the powers-that-be at our little blog-gulag here don't really feel it would be to anyone's advantage to be having a link directly to that page printed here. I am sure that they know what is best for us.
In any event, Una is having fun, growing up, learning about the world and becoming the Chodsky that we knew she would become.

Clark,

Una and Baby would be the best of friends. My girl loves her car rides as well, becoming quite indignant when we leave the house without her.

Wonderful pictures~~ Voted UP & AB! Take care, mar.

Pleased to meet Una. I was intrigued by her breed. Thanks for sharing.

clark farley Hub Author 11 months ago

We had not heard of this breed prior to our search process after Bella, our German Shepherd died.

From what I read, the Chodsky Pes is quite an old breed, but (from what I now know) they were not to be found outside of the Czech Republic, at least until relatively recently.

(thanks to glasnost and the internet? lol)

Hi Clark, How interesting that your hubs start with a photo that is 'hub worthy' my hubs start with a photo that has 'hub potential' we're on the same wavelength...

And the hub develops from there, for me it's intriguing and additive stuff!

Dog always seem to love a ride in the car, Una certainly seems to be enjoying herself, perhaps it is the wonderful smells she's enjoying.

Very enjoyable hub, thanks for sharing.

Hi, well I have done a scientific study of why dogs love looking out the car window, well, not really, but my dog used to love it until she stuck her head out too far and nearly hit a lamp post as we were driving along! so, thats my study, never ever let your dog stick its head out of the window unless its got its eyes open! lol by the way, I went over to be nosy at your site, and yes, thats me, the visitor from England! lol and I must say I love the sense of humour, and yes I do want one of those caps! lol but I have a suggestion, can I make up another one instead of roger etc? its a nelly, thats me, okay not a stupid nelly, just well me! I love history, but I don't believe a word anybody says about anything unless its proven, and no I don't follow the crowd and believe that everything is straight and structured, I never go with the crowd, I am my own man, sorry woman! and I can get everyone confused with my beliefs about the world and the universe, so there, now can I have a column there?! lol seriously, I will be back over to carry on reading it, cheers nell

Nell,

you will be welcome at the Doctrine anytime and thank you for stoppinp and lending us you insight/reflection.

I believe we all look for ways to make (a) universe of things more...manageable? (not really the right word, but I suspect you know what I mean.)

The thing I enjoy about our Wakefield Doctrine is that is allows for all three 'ways of experiencing reality' to be within us all. So no one is simply a roger or a scott or a clark...in fact, I am fond of saying that the people I am meeting at this stage of the blog are the people with the 'flexibility of intelligence' with higher than average percentage of the two other 'non-dominant' personality traits.

Even though it is the natural response to resist what seems like an attempt to overlay the individual with a classification, the thing I enjoy about the Doctrine is that it does not really deal with the individual person as much as it says, 'suppose for a moment you were inclined to believe that the world is a quantifiable place and that behind it all were Rules and Order, how might the world look to you and how then would you tend to relate to it?'

...or perhaps (you might suppose), 'what would it be like to live in a world that (appeared) to be based on the idea that everything was possible and that nothing was totally unchangeable, how would a person find themselves relating to others?'

The more (serious) side of the Wakefield Doctrine is sort of like that, but...we do have hats!* And as much as I hear your request about specific non-clarkscottroger hats, I am afraid the closet I keep them in is not large enough for all of the (individual) names of the world! lol

Thank you for readin an writin...ain't this internet thing amazing?

*the thing about the Doctrine and the (nearly free) hats is that we leave it to the individual to decide which of the three they would like to receive.

Hi, thanks! I have been studying your site with great intellectual well, study! lol and decided that I am a cross between a clark and a scott! talk about confusing! Can't wait for the hat! ha ha

clark farley Hub Author 9 months ago

good call ( I thought I would send you a 'clark' Wakefield Doctrine hat ).

As you know, the idea is that while we are predominately one (of the three) the other capacities (to view the world) are always a part of our total make-up.

Am glad you mention the idea of a being a cross of a clark and a scott. That issue is actually one that we are beginning to look at, i.e. we know that we are dominantly one of the three, but what can we tell about the 'relative strength/proportion' of the two other (none dominant characteristics)?

This is an area of the Doctrine that is beyond my ability to present in the blog, at least in the daily Post format, so I hope that if you continue to have an interest in this thing of ours that you will help further (our) understanding of how different 'strengths' of non-dominant types affect us.

But first things first!! Hat!

Will mail it off tomorrow.

Thanks again, Nell

Hi, I just recieved an email from 'you', it was just a link but when I went onto it I realised that it was something I doubt you would send! lol lets just say luckily my virus scan blocked it, but it seems that someone has got hold of your email address? not sure how, I will send you the link address thing, but not the link as it may infect your computer, okay? nell

Just had a thought, best not to send it in case it goes to that other person, I will put it on your facebook page, okay?

Thanks Nell

Have not heard from any one else about getting strange emails from me via yahoo. Something like this happened a couple of years ago involving yahoo, but I think it was a wholesale hack into yahoo...

I might need to switch to my email account...that is the trouble with these damn hackers...get you thinking that you can't be sure that anything is reliable. Let me try sending you something from my gmail mail account, see if that works better...damn this makes things even more difficult to keep track of... the reason I don't use my work email is just this, given how many 'strangers' I may email in the course of normal internet activities.

Loved your hub and the photo of Una too. I never let my dogs stick their head out of the car window. It goes back a number of years ago, when my golden retriever, Clyde was enjoying a ride while sticking his head out of the window, until he pressed the automatic window button going up. He got over the incident faster than I did.

clark farley profile image

clark farley Hub Author 2 weeks ago

aiyyee... good thing you did not get into an accident on top of the dog being in trouble...I will tend to agree although in Phyllis's defense I believe that the window control buttons on the dog-side window are at an angle to prevent accidental operation

Well if you knew Clyde, this would have been something he would have done. Dogs have personalities of their own, although I don't know if they would fit into the Wakefield Doctrine.
